Biology
A degree in Biology can prepare you for many exciting careers in Biology and Biology
related fields. We offer three Bachelor of Science in biology programs: General Biology, Preprofessional and Wildlife Biology. Students who major in biology can continue with careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Scientific
Research and Laboratory Technology among others.
What we offer:
Our professors include specialists in the fields of zoology, botany, ecology, human anatomy and physiology, animal and plant physiology, cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, chemistry and genetics.
Small Classes: An advantage within the biology department is the opportunity for individual attention due to small class size and labs.
Research Opportunities: A unique aspect of our program of study is the opportunity for research within the department.
State-of-the-art facilities: The Science Building allows all students access to up-to-date laboratories and modern
equipment for teaching. There is also a greenhouse that is more than a campus adornment;
the campus greenhouse at Charleston Southern University gives students unique opportunities
that are not available at many colleges. It currently contains more than 50 different
varieties of orchids: both hybrids and species (many of which can be found around
campus once they have bloomed). There is also a bog garden with more than 30 different
species of carnivorous plants. Used in conjunction with ecology and botany courses
offered on campus, this fully functional biology laboratory is the site of many student
experiments. Botany students are not sitting idly in a classroom taking notes but
are actively participating with hands-on experience creating new plant hybrids. One
such hybridization project currently under way hopes to create a variety of orchid
unique to Charleston Southern University.
Faculty Research: Our professors are actively engaged in research projects in a varied range of disciplines
including biochemistry/molecular biology, botany, developmental biology and reproductive endocrinology.
