CSU Entry Takes Second Place Ribbon at Orchid Show

by University Relations

Charleston Southern University’s, Cattleya percevaliana, won a second place ribbon for species Cattleyas at the recent South Carolina Orchid Society show in Columbia.

Kevin Jones, instructor of biology, received the ribbon for CSU. Jones said, “I give kudos to Adriana Fascelli who cared for this plant last year and to Allison MacLawhorn who is taking care of it now.”

Jones and his students are growing orchids in the University’s greenhouse. “I use the greenhouse as an extension of the laboratory and a bridge to field work,” said Jones. “By bringing students into the greenhouse and giving them the responsibility of the care of some really interesting and exotic species of plants, they gain an appreciation of this wonderful world we have been given as well as skills in botany and horticulture.”

Organizations from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee participated in the S.C. Orchid Society show.
