Future Teachers Are Literacy Elves

Dr. Linda Karges-Bone

FTSSixty children from three Title I school sites in the Lowcountry will receive gifts of books from Charleston Southern University’s Future Teachers Society as part of a service learning initiative called Charleston Child Reads.

Charleston Southern's Future Teachers selected a child’s name from lists provided by guidance counselors at Joseph Pye Elementary, North Charleston Elementary and Spann Elementary and matched the child’s reading level, age and interests. The books were marked with plates saying: A Gift from the School of Education at CSU.

In addition, sets of classic children’s literature were given to the libraries at each site. “Literacy is one of the greatest gifts we can give a child, and these youngsters typically do not own many books. We want them to begin to see books as something personal and important in their lives,” said Dr. Linda Karges-Bone, project coordinator.

The School of Education prepares competent, caring teachers committed to student success across 10 certification areas and is a nationally accredited program through NCATE.
