Charles JamesFormer Charleston Southern defensive back Charles James will get a chance to shine against college football’s best.

James was named to the Stars’ roster on Wednesday in the 2013 Raycom College Football All-Star Classic. The inaugural game will be played on Saturday, Jan. 19 at The Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. (CT) and the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

James will play for former NFL head coach Dan Reeves, and will play alongside fellow NFL prospects from Clemson, Notre Dame, LSU, and Florida, among others. It’s a chance for James to shine against elite competition.

“This is a chance for me to show my ability to play with the top guys,” James said Wednesday. I am blessed to have an opportunity to play in a big all-star game like this and glad to be there. It is going to be a great opportunity to play for and be around a coach like Dan Reeves.”

James was named All-American following his senior season in which he set the CSU career interception record with 12 and helped the Bucs rally from an 0-3 start to a 5-6 finish and four-straight home wins to close out his career.

The Bucs’ secondary finished the season as the nation’s No. 3 pass defense, allowing just 145.5 passing yards per game. James had 32 tackles and 14 pass break-ups in his final season at CSU. He earned First Team All-Big South honors and was named Third Team All-American by Phil Steele. James graduated from CSU in December with a degree in Communications. He is working out in Orlando in the coming months to prepare for opportunities in this spring’s NFL Combine and NFL Draft.

“Right now, I’m here training with and against elite competition in Orlando,” James said. “Ike Taylor (Pittsburgh Steelers) is coaching us, and we’re working out and practicing against and alongside guys like Tavon Austin from West Virginia.”

The Raycom College Football All-Star Classic is managed by a team with more than 250 years of college and professional football experience, ranging from former NFL General Managers to NCAA Division I College Athletic Directors.

The game’s purpose is to provide college and professional football fans with a premiere all-star game that promotes the nation’s elite college football seniors, experienced coaches, and first class facilities in a city and state known for its passion of college football, Montgomery, Alabama.

The game is played at the site of the former Blue-Gray Classic, which was played for years on Christmas Day.
