CSU sponsors Charleston STEM Festival Feb. 8

University Relations

STEM FestivalCharleston Southern University is proud to join other sponsors in support of the 2014 Charleston STEM festival, a free, family-friendly celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the Lowcountry. The festival is funded through a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Program in Public Understanding of Science and Technology and donations from Charleston Southern University, The Citadel, Google, MeadWestvaco, S2TEM Centers SC, and the SC Coalition of Science & Mathematics.

The event, an initiative of the Lowcountry STEM Collaborative, kicks-off February 8 at Charleston’s Liberty Square (just outside the South Carolina Aquarium) with a fun-filled, all-day event. From 10am to 3pm, nearly 40 participants will have interactive exhibits and hands-on activities to highlight local STEM education initiatives, businesses and programs.

In the two weeks after the kickoff, the festival continues with collaborating partners hosting events such as open houses, symposiums and workshops in many locations throughout the area.

“This festival is made possible by the collaboration of many organizations throughout the Lowcountry who understand the importance of a strong education in the STEM disciplines,” said Glenda P. La Rue, co-chair of the event. “Together, we’re building a brighter economic future for our families and our region as a whole.”

CSU math, science, physics, and computer and information sciences faculty will have 5 exhibits at the kick-off event. The faculty and selected CSU students will facilitate activities for K- 12 students involving computer games and demonstrations, robotics, science experiments, and math activities with the use of ipads.

The festival will bring STEM education to our community in fun and in unexpected ways so the message will reach a broad and diverse audience. Research has shown that more than three-quarters of science festival attendees report the event made science learning fun for them. STEM festivals help light a spark in those who participate, leading attendees to seek out additional experiences and explore possible STEM career choices.
