Department of Religion
Welcome to Charleston Southern University’s Department of Religion. The Department of Religion consists of six full-time faculty members and numerous adjunct professors. In addition to their strong academic training, all professors are ordained ministers with significant ministry experience in both the United States and abroad. We are committed to providing quality academic instruction informed by years of practical experience.
Mission Statement
The Department of Religion exists to accomplish the following goals: 1) to offer departmental majors the academic training and practical experience necessary for effective ministry in churches and denominational institutions, 2) to provide the essential preparation for students who plan to enter seminary or other graduate programs in the field of religion, 3) to give basic Christian instruction to all students in the university through the required Old Testament and New Testament survey courses (part of the university’s core curriculum) and 4) to promote a greater awareness of the mission of Charleston Southern University through planned denominational activities and involvement.
Affiliation
Charleston Southern University is affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention. While seeking to interact with many different communities, both Christian and non-Christian, the Department of Religion respectfully acknowledges the important relationship it holds with the churches of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.
Affirmations
All faculty members in the Religion Department teach in the Baptist tradition and affirm important expressions of belief such as the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 and the Chicago Statement of Biblical Inerrancy.
